How can Americans apply to sponsor Ukrainians? U.S.-based sponsors who are willing to house and financially support Ukrainian refugees must file a Declaration of Financial Support (Form I-134) with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services online for each individual seeking sponsorship.

"It is totally possible for any U.S. citizen or permanent resident or anyone here in lawful immigration status to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee," said Bucin.

For starters, people seeking refugee status must typically get themselves to a UNHCR office to initiate an application. The UNHCR will then help direct them to a particular country that's ready and willing to accept them.

The amount of the payment depends on the state in which the refugee resides. In 2023, the minimum will be $914 per month for a single person or $1,371 for a married couple.

Funding support for sponsors

Sponsors of people on the Homes for Ukraine scheme can receive a monthly payment of £350 for up to 12 months, paid in arrears, for as long as you are hosting your Ukrainian guests and that your accommodation has met the necessary standards.

Refugee Sponsorship Program Guidelines

Income Requirement to Become a Sponsor

You must meet certain income requirements to become a sponsor. The most common minimum financial requirement is an annual income of $22,000. This figure is calculated to be at least 125% above the Federal poverty level based on the ASPE.
